CUBAN MOTHER UNDER SIEGE FOR HER PILGRIMAGES TO CHURCH AND THE TOMB OF HER SON

BANES, CUBA. September 4, 2010. REINA LUISA TAMAYO, is alerting international public opinion that she has information that she will be attacked tomorrow, Sunday, September 5, 2010, by government instigated mobs during the usual pilgrimage she takes every Sunday to the Catholic Church of La Caridad and to the cemetery to visit the tomb of her son.

Reina is the mother of Cuban prisoner of conscience, ORLANDO ZAPATA TAMAYO, who died on February 23, 2010 following an 86 day hunger strike, time when he was subjected to inhumane and cruel treatment in prison by being savagely beaten, humiliated, and denied water for 18 days.

The only highway to the city of Banes, where Reina lives, is presently blocked and controlled by State Security Agents and by the Political Police to prevent the entrance of those human rights activists and members of Cuban civil society who wish to accompany Reina Luisa Tamayo as she pays homage to her dead son in church and at the cemetery every Sunday.

We urgently request the solidarity of democratic governments, political, religious and civic leaders regarding the physical and mental well-being of Reina Luisa Tamayo whose life, as well as the life of those who accompany her, are in constant danger for attempting to peacefully march to pray in a church and visit the tomb of Orlando Zapata Tamayo every Sunday in Banes,Cuba.
