Ros-Lehtinen to Host Briefing by “Spy Catcher” Chris Simmons
on Threats Posed by Cuban Spies in U.S.
(WASHINGTON) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will host a briefing by Chris Simmons, an expert on U.S. counterintelligence efforts against Cuba Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
"I am pleased to welcome back Mr. Simmons to speak to Members of Congress about the threat posed to our nation by Cuban spies.
“The recent arrest of two U.S. citizens accused of spying on the U.S. for Cuba reminds us that the Castro regime does not rest in its efforts to undermine our security.
“These people allegedly engaged in espionage activities for the Cuban regime for nearly 30 years, providing sensitive information to the Castro brothers, which was then undoubtedly relayed to dictatorial buddies of their choosing.
“It is critical to continue to shine a spotlight on these crimes and to gain a better understanding of how Cuban espionage threatens the U.S., and what we can do to stop it.”
Note: The briefing will take place on Wednesday, June 24, at 1:00 p.m. in room 2200 Rayburn House Office Building.
Background: Chris Simmons is a former Defense Intelligence Agency analyst and has been deeply involved in U.S. counterintelligence efforts against Cuba. Simmons played a key role in the identification, investigation, and debriefing of convicted Cuban spy Ana Belen Montes.
Walter Kendall Myers, a former high-level State Department official, and his wife, Gwendolyn Steingraber Myers, were arrested and charged with conspiracy, being agents of a foreign government, and wire fraud.
H/T to Joseito!
