› A U.S. government grant is helping to pay the tuition and expenses of students who arrived without the Cuban government’s approval.

A NEW WORLD: Cuban students walk onto the streets of Miami after a press conference Monday at MDC. The students are in the United States to study without the Cuban government’s specific approval.

Fifteen young Cubans, from rappers to dissidents, will begin classes Tuesday at Miami Dade College in an unprecedented scholarship program for students from a country were universities regularly expel opposition activists.

With some of the students already wearing sky-blue MDC hoodies, the 15 were introduced at a ceremony Monday to the professors who will see them through a six-month program of English, computer, business and social studies.

The students did not answer questions from the news media, and a person involved in the program said they were very nervous, especially the younger ones and those who had never been out of their country before.

A Miami nonprofit group, the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba, will pay the estimated $12,000 to $15,000 cost of transportation, housing and food for each of the students. The foundation received a $3.4 million, three-year grant from the U.S. government in 2011 to help civil society groups in Cuba, and gets more than $600,000 from private donors each year.

Cuban universities, all controlled by the communist government and operating under the slogan "the university is for revolutionaries," regularly expel or deny entry to pro-democracy activists and sometimes even their children.

Last month, Miguel Molina reported he was expelled from his second year of medical studies in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba because of his activism in the dissident Cuban Patriotic Union.

MDC Provost Rolando Montoya touted the “We Are One People” scholarships as the first of their kind since 1959. Other Cubans have studied at U.S. universities, but as individuals, and usually with direct or indirect Cuban government approval.

The 15 students are expected to return to their country after the program and teach what they learned in Miami to “others who don’t have the same opportunities,” said Juan Antonio Blanco, head of MDC’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives.

CRITICS INCLUDED

The Cubans, who arrived over the weekend, range in age from 18 to 37, are racially diverse, and more than half are women, MDC officials said. They did not have the full list of their names, but some were known.

Among them are three well-known government critics: Raudel Collazo of the rap group Escuadrón Patriota (Patriot Squadron); graffiti artist Danilo Maldonado, known as El Sexto; and blogger Henry Constantin, who was expelled from the University of Oriente in 2006 and the Marta Abreu University in Villa Clara in 2008.

Four are children of dissidents, including Lienys Moya Soler, daughter of Ladies in White leader Berta Soler and former political prisoner Angel Moya; and Saylí Navarro, active in the Ladies in White and daughter of former political prisoner Felix Navarro. She was expelled from the law school in Matanzas in 2010.

Also in the group are independent lawyers Lartiza Diversent, who explains to defendants their rights although she cannot practice in court because she is not a member of a government-approved lawyer’s office, and Yaremis Florez.

The Cubans will study English as a second language until March and then move on to the other classes — courses regularly offered by MDC but redesigned to meet their specific requirements.

MDC, the nation’s largest college with 175,000 students at eight campuses, said it welcomed the Cubans “as it does with hundreds of students it receives each year from across the globe, especially from the Caribbean and Latin America.”

Blanco, a former senior analyst for the Communist Party of Cuba, said the college had been quietly working on the “dream” for months.

Half a dozen relatives of Cuban rulers Raúl and Fidel Castro have studied abroad, many of them in Spain and with Spanish government scholarships, according to the blog Cuba al Descubierto (Cuba Uncovered).

It is unlikely that the Cuban government approves of the Miami scholarship program.

‘ SUBVERSIVE’

“The message sent is tempting and highly subversive: Not only those who belong to official institution can leave to study abroad. And return,” Miami blogger Emilio Ichikawa wrote over the weekend.

The Obama administration offered scholarships to Cuban students who wanted to enroll in U.S. universities in 2008. About 750 applied at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Havana, which selected 30, Miami geographer Eudel Cepero said. But the Cuban government denied them permission to travel abroad, and the program foundered.

Cepero noted that thousands of U.S. university students have traveled to Cuba to enroll in courses there, in some cases guided by Cuban government sympathizers.

More than 500,000 students from about 200 countries enroll each year in U.S. colleges and universities. Almost 60 percent of them come from Asia, 14 percent from Europe and 10 percent from Latin America, Cepero wrote in an online column.

Cuban police seized hundreds of toys from dissidents in a string of raids early Friday described by a pro-government blogger as a crackdown on a planned “provocation” — giving the toys, paid for by Miami exiles, to children.
Among the homes raided were those of José Daniel Ferrer, a former political prisoner and founder of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), and the headquarters of the dissidents Ladies in White in Havana.
UNPACU members said State Security agents and police raided Ferrer’s home in the eastern town of Palmarito de Cauto at 5 a.m. Friday as well as the homes of two other group members in the nearby cities of Santiago de Cuba and Holguín.
Police search warrants specifically mentioned “toys, money and other goods of illegal origin,” said UNPACU member Yusmila Ferrera. Dissidents planned to distribute 700 toys throughout the island to mark Three Kings Day, Cuba’s traditional gift-giving day.
The raiders of Ferrer’s home seized all the stockpiled toys plus five computers, several cellphones and about $600 in cash, Ferrera said. More toys, other computers, phones and $180 in cash were seized in the two other raids.
Belkis Cantillo, head of the Ladies in White in eastern Cuba, told El Nuevo Herald that she and 11 group members were staging a sit-in Friday in a house in Palmarito “to demand the return of what they [police] stole from us today.”
Ferrer and nine other UNPACU members were hauled away by police during the raids. All except Ferrer were released one hour later, and there was no word on his whereabouts as of Friday evening, said UNPACU member Andris Verdecia.
Ladies in White leader Berta Soler said police also raided her group’s headquarters in Havana at 5 a.m. and seized the toys, food, 70 chairs, a laptop and three printers, toilet paper and 100 towels and bed sheets that were to be donated to the children’s parents.
“This has been a plunder,” Soler told El Nuevo Herald from the headquarters, the home of the group’s late founder, Laura Pollán.
Soler said she and her husband Angel Moya, who like Ferrer was jailed from 2003 to 2011, were detained by police Friday morning as they left their home in the eastern Havana suburb of Alamar but were released after the raid was completed.
The Havana Ladies in White will continue, she said, with their plans to hand out toys to 150 to 200 children on Saturday in their annual gift drive, started in 2004 to mark the Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 6, when the three kings delivered gifts to the baby Jesus.
Police also have warned several Ladies in White members Friday to stay away from the event Saturday or face arrest, independent journalist Roberto J. Guerra reported.
UNPACU spokesman Guillermo Fariñas said the money to buy the toys in Cuban stores was donated by Cuban business people in South Florida “from their personal pockets” in an effort coordinated by the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF).
“There is no shame in saying that Cuban exiles are capable of sending us money to donate toys to children,” he said from his home in Santa Clara, in central Cuba. The toys he plans to distribute are in several different houses and had not been seized.
With the island facing an economic crisis, Fariñas added, the government decided, “in its inability to give toys to poor children, to seize our toys.”
Dissidents who have been allowed to travel abroad for the first time in decades this year have been picking up cash and other forms of support as they make public appearances in their travels.
The planned gift-giving gatherings were not going to include any mention of politics, only chats on religion and God, Fariñas said.
Cuban officials made no mention of the raids, but a pro-government Twitter account that uses the name of Yohandry Fontana painted the toys as part of a campaign to subvert the communist government by the Miami-based Cuban American National Foundation (CANF) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
“They no longer respect even children. They were attempting a media show and provocation. Everything dismantled!” said one tweet from Fontana, believed to be a pseudonym used by one or more State Security agents.
Another Fontana tweet said police had seized “money and means from mercenaries,” and still another alleged, “USAID and CANF are linked.” Fontana also described UNPACU as “an arm of the CIA,” and CANF as “a terrorist organization.”
The crackdown came two days after Cuban ruler Raúl Castro, in a speech marking the 55th anniversary of the victory of the country’s revolution, warned against a campaign by “powerful forces” to undermine the communist system, especially the youth.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Miami Republican, said Friday’s arrests showed that “55 year later, this brutal dictatorship remains committed to maintaining a bloody grip over the island, denying human rights and democratic freedoms to 11 million Cubans.”
“The campaign that the tyrant is afraid of is the one waged by opposition leaders that is based on respect for human rights, multi-party elections and freedom of expression,” she declared in a statement.
The Miami-based Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba issued a statement Friday urging international human rights organizations to demand an immediate end to the arrests of dissidents and other forms of repression.

"There was a time when his neighbors celebrated the support Abelardo Arteaga gave to the Cuba of the Castro brothers. Fifty-five years ago this Jan. 1, Cubans in Ybor City and West Tampa danced in the street when the Cuban revolution declared victory.

Much has changed since that day in 1959. Cuba embraced Communism. The Soviet Union fell. Fidel Castro relinquished power to his brother Raul. Eleven U.S. presidents tilted against the Castros. Today, Congress debates what to do next with Cuba.

Yet through it all, Arteaga, a Tampa native, has never wavered in his support of the island nation.


At 91, Arteaga is the elder statesman among those in Tampa who would eliminate the trade and travel embargo imposed by the U.S. He has challenged it from the beginning. He has sparred with those who note that the revolution brought its own oppression, against people who speak in opposition."


So only those who oppose the embargo are considered "ELDERLY STATESMAN" and the only true supporters of Cuba?

Mr. Arteaga was honored by the Castro dictatorship in 2007 and given honorary Citizenship???? So are YOU with the dicatatorship???

Thomas Arteaga saw Cuba’s famed poet and revolutionary leader Jose Marti during his visits to Tampa, heard his voice, and was inspired by his message that Cubans around the world needed to unite to overthrow their nation’s colonial ruler, Spain.

Arteaga has heard whispers that his father fought briefly in the Cuban War of Independence, but he has no proof. He is certain his father supported the war in other ways. He donated a share of his weekly cigar-roller earnings to Marti, as did many Tampa Cubans in those days — and he built homemade bombs for the war."


I see only that Mr. arteaga's father SAW Jose Marti and only those with links to the TAMPA CUBANS are the ONLY original FREEDOM fighters...


"Deposed President Fulgencio Batista was a vicious tyrant, Arteaga said, and Castro reminded many Cubans of Marti. During the revolution, Castro promised to return Cuba to its people."


So what is dictator castro after 54 years?????


Everybody in Tampa supported Fidel Castro and the revolution in the early years,” said USF’s Barrios. “Then the revolution turned socialist and the opinions of a lot of people abandoned that position. There was a lot of repression and silencing of those who directly supported the Revolution. The Arteaga family was unfortunately one of them.”

Arteaga said he did not feel safe, so in 1961 relocated to Cuba.

His wife and daughters remained in Tampa, but were supposed to follow soon after. He was hired as an upholsterer at a hotel in Havana. He purchased a plot of land on which to build a home. But after a few months he had second thoughts. He loved Cuba and wanted to support it, but he thought it would be too difficult for his children to adjust to an alien nation still searching for stability under a new government.


Mr. Arteaga,  about the time you relocated to Cuba in 1961, thousands of Cubans were executed, imprisoned, and businesses taken away......do you call that repression?


He has one wish left.

Este 10 de diciembre, Día de los Derechos Humanos, la Unión patriótica de Cuba reporta más de 130 detenciones en la región oriental del país: activistas de la UNPACU, Damas de Blanco y miembros de otras organizaciones que defienden el respeto a los Derechos Humanos.
Ante la realización de reuniones, marchas, manifestaciones en parques, avenidas u otros lugares públicos de los activistas prodemocráticos en protesta por el irrespeto de derechos universalmente reconocidos por parte de la dictadura de Raúl Castro, agentes de la policía política, de la Nacional, brigadas para-policiales y otros miembros del Minint, agredieron físicamente a los disidentes con bastones, gases lacrimógenos y otros objetos contundentes.
Las detenciones ocurrieron en plena calle o mediante asaltos a viviendas en la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba, San Luis, Palma Soriano, Contramaestre, Puerto Padre, Bayamo, Baracoa, Holguín y Gibara.
También se reportaron asaltos sin detenciones a viviendas de activistas con gases lacrimógenos. 20 opositores agredidos en Velasco, afectando a niños y en el poblado de Maffo, Contramaestre, resultaron lesionados con armas blancas y piedras los activistas de UNPACU Mercedes Domínguez, con herida de 15 puntos en su mano derecha y otras lesiones; Arnaldo Lozada, herido en la rodilla; Eriadne de la Paz, Yoandris Veranis, heridos en la espalda y mano derecha respectivamente; y el menor de 13 años Josué Sardiñas, lesionado en el abdomen y la pierna derecha.
Los operativos incluyeron además de la violencia física el robo de las pertenencias de varios activistas: dinero, cámaras fotográficas, de vídeo, celulares, etc.
A pesar de la fuerte ola represiva los disidentes orientales como otros de las demás regiones del país, según reportes, no dejaron de realizar sus actividades, saliendo a las calles con carteles que exigían respeto a la libertad de opinión, asociación, a una vida digna, vivienda, salarios justos, etc. Se reunieron en varias casas para reflexionar acerca del estado de deterioro del respeto a los derechos en la isla y las acciones futuras a seguir para cambiarlo. Aparecieron además carteles, grafitis, y se lanzaron octavillas prodemocracia.
La mayoría fueron liberados en la noche. Más de una decena permanecen detenidos.
En el caso de Santiago de Cuba, además de lo reportado, la vivienda de Ovidio Martín Castellanos, Coordinador de la UNPACU en Santiago de Cuba, sufrió dos asaltos. En el primer asalto aplicaron gases lacrimógenos y se llevaron a 4 activistas de los más de 20 que se encontraban en la casa en el tejado protestando por la violencia contra 23 Damas de Blanco que estaban siendo arrestadas violentamente en ese momento. Los policías aplicaron los gases lacrimógenos y al verse los mismos policías asfixiados salieron sólo con 4 detenidos. Al momento entraron de nuevo y se llevaron a 5 más, pero los gases los estaban asfixiando de nuevo y tuvieron que salir de la vivienda. A los activistas se los llevaron para diversos lugares, amenazando con fusilarles porque “esto se va a acabar y vamos a acabar con las contemplaciones, vamos a terminar con Uds”. Llegaron a simular que éste se llevaría a cabo. Después amenazaron con entrar y llevarse a los 16 que quedaban dentro, cosa que finalmente no hicieron.
Todavía continúa detenida la Dama de Blanco y activista de la UNPACU Solange de la Caridad Claramunt Ribaflecha, detenida y golpeada en horas de la tarde.
Algunas detenciones ocurridas en el Oriente han sido:

• En Palma Soriano la UNPACU tuvo un total de 9 detenidos.
• En Holguín en total 32 activistas detenidos.
• En Gibara 9 activistas detenidos.
• 1 activista detenido en Velasco.
• 4 activistas detenidos en Banes.
• En Dos Caminos (San Luis) 3.
• En Santiago de Cuba en total 38 Damas de Blanco más 20 de la UNPACU, 58 detenidos en total.
• En Bayamo 6 Damas de Blanco detenidas.
• En Baracoa 5 activistas de la UNPACU detenidos
• En Puerto Padre 16 detenciones en la casa del activista del MCL Roger Curbelo, muy golpeados éstos, entre ellos miembros del cuasi desarticulado MCL y donde se llevaron al Coordinador de la UNPACU Alexis Guerrero.
• En Manzanillo, Granma, 1 activista detenido.
• En Chaparra Jesús Menéndez, de la UNPACU, fue detenido.

SECCION OCCIDENTAL

La UNPACU, desde La Habana, reporta también que en una sola operación ha habido 131 detenciones de activistas y Damas de Blanco que se habían dado cita en la calle 23 para una actividad pública.

RESPUESTA DE LA UNPACU

En medio de la represión los activistas continuaron con las actividades a pleno rendimiento y las autoridades no pudieron en ningún momento detener las actividades dada la inmensa capilaridad de las acciones, por lo que las fuerzas represivas en muchas ocasiones se vieron desbordadas por el ferviente activismo en toda la isla.

La UNPACU toma las calles el Día Mundial de los Derechos Humanos

Hasta la hora del reporte (9:40am) el balance es el siguiente:

3 detenidos brutalmente en Dos Caminos (San Luis)
En Santiago de Cuba las fuerzas policiales han detenido a 15 Damas de Blanco y la policía política tiene rodeada la casa de la Dama de Blanco Solange de la Caridad Claramunt, donde hay casi una treintena de Damas de Blanco reunidas que fueron las que pudieron llegar sin ser detenidas.
Los activistas están celebrando el día de diferentes maneras:
En Palmarito de Cauto una veintena de activistas realizó una marcha pública a las 8:30 de la mañana, por lo que inmediatamente llegaron efectivos de la policía política. Éstos están haciendo algo que hasta la fecha no era muy habitual. Están llevando termos [barriles] de cerveza y ron para venderlos cerca del área donde se encuentran los activistas, lo que da lugar a una mayor violencia posterior porque luego emplean a personas en estado ebrio para tirar piedras y agredir a los activistas de la UNPACU.
En Contramaestre ocurrió algo muy singular. La policía política llevaron un termo de cerveza frente a la vivienda donde se reunían los activistas de la UNPACU. El Delegado del Poder Popular, mandado por la policía política, le comunicó sarcásticamente a Luis Enrique Lozada, nuestro Coordinador en Contramaestre, que “iban a poner un termo de cerveza y que iban a celebrar junto a la UNPACU también el Día Mundial de los Derechos Humanos“. Luis Enrique Lozada les comunicó que “ojalá sea para celebrar juntos, pero no hay mucho que celebrar juntos cuando Uds. apoyan las violaciones de los Derechos Humanos y nosotros luchamos para que se respeten para todos los cubanos sin discriminaciones de ningún tipo y ojalá ese termo de cerveza no sea para emborrachar personas y terminar enviándolas a agredirnos.”
En Palmarito de Cauto, que ocurrió un hecho similar, los manifestantes de la UNPACU lanzaban por las calles vivas a los Derechos Humanos, a la labor por la libertad y la democracia, a las Damas de Blanco, denunciado los bajos salarios y la situación de miseria de bienes y servicios integral que sufre la población, etc.
También Palma Soriano estaba llena de grafitis, pintadas en las calles, aceras y paredes por los Derechos Humanos y nuestros activistas concentrados en las 5 células que tiene Palma Soriano, pues han crecido el número de células en Palma Soriano.
También hay varias células nuevas de la UNPACU en Santiago de Cuba. Allí los activistas de la UNPACU reunidos en varias células salieron a las calles en favor de los Derechos Humanos.
En el caso de Palma Soriano, en la noche los partidarios del régimen taparon los grafitis con pintura pero los activistas antes de su secado los lavaron con agua y los grafitis siguen a esta hora visibles por toda la ciudad. Los vecinos de La Ceiba, en Palma Soriano, ya dicen jocosamente que “allí ya no hay comunismo, hay oposición”. Por ello el día 26 de noviembre de este año fuerzas represivas tomaron las casas de varios activistas con armas largas y fuerzas de choque y antimotines [como ya reportamos] saldándose con decenas de detenidos brutalmente.
Se respira una dinámica muy fuerte a favor de los Derechos Humanos por activistas de la sociedad civil, miembros de la UNPACU y Damas de Blanco en toda la región del Oriente cubano.
En la parte Occidental, tenemos detenciones en Pinar de Río, Eduardo Díaz Fleitas y otros activistas de la UNPACU fueron detenidos.
También en Matanzas hubo detenciones ayer y fuertes operativos policiales hoy. En Santa Clara también hubo detenciones de activistas de la Unión Patriótica de Cuba.
Ante todo esto, y en el Día Mundial de los Derechos Humanos, el régimen responde con la represión, con barriles de cerveza y ron frente a los activistas, gastando numerosos recursos movimientos de vehículos pesados y automóviles, gastando combustible y medios en un país en el que la precariedad es absoluta para los bienes más básicos.
En vez de estar todos abogando por el respeto de los Derechos Humanos, una parte de la sociedad civil está conmemorando la fecha y otra [el régimen] tratando de impedir toda conmemoración y violando flagrantemente los derechos de otras personas, en este caso los activistas defensores de los Derechos Humanos.

CUBA: I Encuentro Internacional sobre Derechos Humanos

I Encuentro Internacional sobre Derechos Humanos y Pactos de la ONU El proyecto independiente Estado de SATS en colaboración con el Foro Nuevo País y el Observatorio Cubano de Derechos Humanos (OCDH), invita a artistas, intelectuales, activistas y defensores de derechos humanos a participar en el I Encuentro Internacional sobre Derechos Humanos y Pactos de la ONU como parte de la Campaña Por otra Cuba y el 65 aniversario de la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos. Nuestros proyectos han trabajado durante los últimos años en la creación y crecimiento de espacios públicos donde se puedan discutir y proyectar abiertamente distintas perspectivas sobre la realidad y el futuro de nuestra nación. Desde el mes de agosto del 2012, junto a diversos grupos y activistas, comprometidos con la situación social de nuestra nación, comenzamos la Campaña por otra Cuba . Esta iniciativa ha ido involucrando a un número cada vez mayor de cubanos dentro y fuera de la isla en una demanda cívica que reclama al gobierno cubano la ratificación e implementación de los Pactos de los Derechos Civiles y Políticos y Económicos, Sociales y Culturales de la ONU. En un momento en el que la sociedad civil cubana se encuentra en crecimiento es imprescindible el intercambio directo con diferentes actores de dentro y fuera de la isla. La realización de este encuentro permitirá un acercamiento desde el arte y el pensamiento a un tema tan vital como los derechos humanos. Activistas, artistas, intelectuales y profesionales, cubanos y de la comunidad internacional, podrán durante dos días compartir visiones y experiencias, en un país donde dichas garantías y derechos no forman parte de la realidad cotidiana. La inauguración del encuentro será el 10 de diciembre 2013 y durante su celebración ocurrirán paneles temáticos, muestras audiovisuales, una exposición con el tema: Arte y derechos humanos (pintura, grafica, fotografía, instalaciones), performances y un concierto de clausura. La última jugada de Cuba

La suspensión de Cuba de servicios consulares en los Estados Unidos puede tener poco que ver con las finanzas y mucho que ver con el interés del general Raúl Castro de disminuir las visitas de cubanoamericanos a la isla.

Si ningún banco en los Estados Unidos está dispuesto a manejar las finanzas por compra de visados para viajar a Cuba, el régimen de Castro podría renunciar a los cargos o solicitar que los pagos sean enviado a otros países o cobrarlos a los cubanoamericanos cuando lleguen a la isla.

Tal vez el gobierno cubano ve esta suspensión como una manera de ejercer presión sobre los Estados Unidos y su prohibición a los estadounidenses de viajar a Cuba y así poner a prueba la influencia política de los segmentos de la comunidad cubanoamericana que desean el fin de las sanciones económicas.

Si, como espera el gobierno cubano, hay una presión masiva de los cubanoamericanos para abrir los viajes, la prohibición para que los estadounidenses viajen también puede caer en la cuneta. La declaración del Secretario Kerry en la OEA el 18 de noviembre puede ser una pista en esta dirección.

Tal vez hay un objetivo más siniestro de parte del gobierno de Castro. Para ese régimen los cubanoamericanos representan un grupo mucho más subversivo que los turistas de los Estados Unidos. Los cubanoamericanos hablan el idioma, tienen amigos o familiares en la isla y llegan con enormes paquetes de mercancía que alimenta a los "cuentapropistas" y al mercado negro. Si los estadounidenses son los que viajan a Cuba, el régimen de Castro puede preferir disminuir o acabar con los viajes de los expatriados cubanos que son más subversivos y peligrosos.

Es importante recordar que en Cuba las decisiones económicas son dictadas por consideraciones políticas. El gobierno cubano puede compensar la pérdida de dólares por los viajes de cubanoamericanos con las visitas de turistas americanos o con un incremento en las remesas de los cubanoamericanos en los Estados Unidos.

De cualquier manera, esto puede ser un riesgo calculado por el régimen de Castro para forzar la mano de Washington y cambiar la composición de los turistas que llegan a Cuba desde los Estados Unidos. Yanquis sí, cubanos no.
